ofCamdenCounty,GeorgiawereclosedtoshrimpingunderthedirectionoftheNationalOceanicand
AtmosphericAdministrationduetoaprolongedperiodofwatertemperaturesatorbelow9°Cintheregion.
Whiletheclosureofthisfisherywascriticallynecessarytoprotectthepopulationofspawningshrimp,local
shrimpersandothershavenotworkedorearnedanyincomerelatedtotheshrimpharvestsincethe
closure.
CamdenCountyisworkingwithshrimperstoencouragetheDepartmentofCommercetodeclareafishery
disasterinthewatersoffthecoastofGeorgia.Thisdesignationbeginsthefederalprocessofproviding
assistancetofishermanimpactedbytheclosure.Arequestforafisherydisasterdeterminationismade
totheSecretarybythestategovernororbyanelectedordulyappointedrepresentativeofanaffected
fishingcommunity.OnFriday,May18,CamdenCountyAdministrator,SteveHoward,formallysubmitted
alettertoUnitedStatesSecretaryofCommerce,WilburRoss,requestingthisdesignationonbehalfofthe
fishingcommunityinCamdenCounty,Georgia.
“Wearepleasedthatafternearlyfourmonths,theshrimpersinsoutheastGeorgiaaregoingbacktowork,”
saidHoward.“However,veryfewpeoplecangomonthsonendwithoutincomeandthereforeweaskthe
DepartmentofCommercetodeclarethisclosureafisherydisasterandbegintheprocessofproviding
disasterassistancetotheaffectedshrimpers.”
