RiversAliveprogram.RiversAliveprogramisaprogramoftheGeorgiaDepartmentofNatural
ResourcesEnvironmentalProtectionDivision.Theprogramtargetscleanupsacrossallwaterwaysinthe
StateofGeorgiaincludingrivers,lakes,andcoastalwaters.Inthe2016cleanupyear,23,060volunteers
removedover541,000poundsoftrashandrecyclablesfromwaterwaysthroughoutthestate.
Since2014,CamdenCountyExtensionhasorganizedandhostedtwoRiversAlivecleanupeventsper
year.Withthehelpof223volunteers,over3529poundsoflitterfromtheshorelinesofCamdenCounty
hasbeencollectedduringsixcleanupevents.In2016,CamdenCountyExtensionpartneredwith
CrookedRiverStateparkandhostedarivercleanupdayduring“YourStateParkDay”withintheshores
ofthepark.CamdenCountyExtensionalsohostedaneventindowntownWoodbinewherethecrewof
theUSSGeorgiahelpedcollectdebrisalongtheRiverwalk.Debrisitemssuchaspipes,fishingline,a
campingchair,tires,atrucktoolbox,anartificialflower,plasticbottles,ananchor,crabfloats,andaboat
holdingtankwerecollectedfromtheshoreline.
ThemissionofRiversAliveistocreateawarenessofandinvolvementinthepreservationofGeorgia’s
waterresources.Rivercleanupdaysnotonlyimprovetheaestheticsandsafetyofourlocalnaturalareas,
butalsothehealthofourlocalestuariesandmarineecosystem.ThisyearCamdenCountyExtensionwill
onceagainpartnerwithCrookedRiverStateparkfor“YourStateParkDay”onSeptember30,2017.
Volunteerswillassistinremovingtrashfromthefishingareasandhelpcleanlitterfromalongthewater
waysfrom10amtill12pm.OnOctober14,2017,CamdenCountyExtensionwillhostarivercleanupin
downtownWoodbinealongtheRiverwalkfrom10amtill12pm.
“Myhopeeveryyearistogetmoreofourcitizensinvolvedinourcleanups,fosteringinvolvementand
stewardshipinthespecialecosystemsandresourcesthatCamdenCountyhastooffer,”JessicaWarren,
CamdenCountyExtensionAgricultureandNaturalResourcesAgentsaid.
