allCamdenCountyresidentsandvisitorstotakepropersafetyprecautionsduringtheholiday
season.Withcoolingtemperatures,indoorandoutdoordecorating,andincreasedcooking,
everyoneshouldtakestepstoensuretheirhomeissafe.
“Eachyearduringtheholidayseasonthefiredepartmentseesanincreaseinfiresduetoawide
varietyofreasons,”saidCCFROperationsChiefLisaBoyett.“Somefiresarerelatedtopeople
heatingtheirhomes,displayingdecorations,orcookingforaholidaymeal,makingitimportantfor
CamdenCountycitizenstopaycloseattentiontotheiractivitiesduringtheseason.”
Toavoidfires,injuries,orunexpectedhospitalvisits,emergencypersonnelrecommendfollowing
thesetips:
eHeatersneedspace.Keepanythingthatcanburnatleastthreefeetawayfromheating
equipment.Plugspaceheatersdirectlyintowalloutletsandneverintoanextensioncord
Orpowerstrip.
eCandlesshouldbeatleastonefootawayfromwalls,curtains,orflammablematerials.
Neverleaveacandleunattended;ensurethatallcandlesareextinguishedbeforeleaving
aroom.
eMakesuretowaterlivetreesdailyandunplugelectricalcordseachnight.Ifusingan
artificialtree,ensurethatitisflame-resistant.
eDonotoverloadelectricoutlets.Checkelectricalcordsoften.Replacecracked,damaged,
andlooseelectricalorextensioncords.Donottrytorepairthem.
eKeepdecorationsandplantsoutofreachofsmallchildrenandpets.Havea“kid-freezone”
ofatleastthreefeetaroundthestoveandareaswherehotfoodordrinkisprepared.
eTheleadingcauseoffiresinthekitchenisunattendedcooking.Stayinthekitchenwhen
youarefrying,boiling,grilling,orbroilingfood.Turnofftheburnerifyouleavethekitchen
