If a person’s behavior escalates beyond a reasonable level or they become physical - Disengage and immediately call 911. DO: β—Š Project calmness β—Š Listen - Encourage dialogue β—Š Project a relaxed and attentive posture β—Š Acknowledge feelings to indicate you know they are upset β—Š Establish ground rules if unreasonable behavior persists β—Š Calmly describe the consequences of violent behavior β—Š Use delaying tactics to give the person time to calm down. β—Š Point out choices and reassure everything will be OK β—Š Break big problems into small choices β—Š Accept criticism and ask clarifying questions β—Š Ask for recommendations and repeat back what is said DO NOT: β—Š Accept demands from the actor β—Š Physically contact the other person β—Š Make sudden or threatening movements β—Š Challenge, belittle, threaten or dare the individual β—Š Criticize or act impatient β—Š Attempt to bargain β—Š Try to make the situation seem less serious than it is β—Š Make false statements or promises you cannot keep β—Š Use complicated words or technical defi nitions β—Š Take sides or agree with distortions β—Š Get blocked from the exit
